Importing of Rare Medications
Whenever a rare medicine, that is unavailable in Israel, is needed for treating a patient, the organization locates the required medication, using its contact men

across the world, and arranges for its transfer to Israel, swiftly and efficiently. Usually, the requests for this service come from various hospital department  heads, and the medicine is ordered only when there is a written prescription.

Thousands of people benefit from this unique service every year.

The costs were included in the medical consultation

This unique service offers a solution not only to people who need rare medications; it's a service that necessitates maintaining contacts all over the world: Doctors, pharmacists and manufacturers with concessions, producing medications that are approved for marketing only within the framework of the research work that is being done on them.

Sometimes, the struggle to include a patient from Israel in the research work, that was approved only for residents of another land, calls for activating Rabbi Firer's numerous contacts.

Yoram Ofek, in charge of "detection" and locating, presents the results of his sleuthing to Rabbi Firer. Next, some personal charm has to be switched on. The  party on the other side of the line, thousands of miles away, must feel the murmur of the heart, and the sincerity that accompanies the irregular request.

Not always are the efforts crowned with success; there are many places where doing away with formalities is non-existent, and even the substantial weight that saving the patient who is waiting for the medicine carries, is not taken into account in their considerations. The only choice that is left, is to bring the patient to the medication, instead of the simpler procedure of bringing the medication to the patient. This is also one way of acquiring a rare medication.

"Medication" does not always mean a pill or a capsule; it could also be a certain device that is necessary for a rare operation. In such a case, the race to attain it calls for a lot of concentrated effort and appeasing the strict regulations of the Customs Authorities in Israel. Here, fortunately, people's hearts are more open, and they try to do everything to help; after all, the sick person is their own flesh and blood, not just another statistic. We are talking about a human being, whose life  must be ?aved.

In addition to arranging for medication and required items, Yoram, with his typical dedication and devotion, arranges the sending of copies of patients' tests across the world, every day. These are not just x-rays; the shipment might include slides of tissue samples that were taken from the patient and sent to biopsies, "imaging" films depicting the patient and his insides (echo, catheterizations and other imaging tests, recorded on cassettes or magnetic computer media), and, naturally, a case history translated into the language spoken by the doctor.

Yoram packs everything up, meticulously recording each of the numerous shipments. He knows how much the patient is looking forward to the forthcoming reply, and does everything in his power to speed up the process, which is completed by handing the expected reply to the patient, naturally after having informed Rabbi Firer of its nature.
